Has Spotify reached a tipping point?

Posted by: admin In: Online stuff

First post for my new blog and thought I’d jump on the bandwagon being pulled so eagerly by Kieron and give Spotify a plug.

I end up sitting at my desk most of the day and have tried various ways of listening to music, Pandora, last.fm and iTunes and hard as I tried to get used to them, I never found myself persevering. However the user interface for Spotify is so easy I’m hooked. Sharing your playlists with pals over msn is so easy and the interruption from adverts is so minimal you hardly notice it.

For a free service it’s head and shoulders above anything out there, and if the buzz around the i-level office is anything to go by, Jonny Forster et al could have a bona fide smash on their hands.

A couple of suggestions to improve. The top 10 lists on the homepage are a bit limited. I’d like to see them broken down by genre, rather than just by country. Another thing I’d like to see is some way of finding out what other people interested in the same stuff as me are listening to. I like to keep up with new music but unfortunately am not cool enough to be in the know. No doubt soon there will be all kinds of sites popping up to share Spotify playlists, which would help but would be nice if Spotify could lead the way themselves on this.

Anyway, the customary offer of an invitation should anyone want one is open, please leave a comment or get me on Twitter.

And a few of my playlists:

Just thought I’d be the first to christen your shiny new blog with a comment mate. Unfortunately I can’t think of anything dazzling or witty to say so this is er…it!

P.S. Spotify does indeed rock, glad you like it.

    Bailey,

How much did Spotify pay you to write that?!

    Lang.

  3. Gavin Hudson says:

Aye – but not in the colonies sadly! I can’t listen to it.

What were your top ten Manchester Bands then Matt? If I was to guess…
    Oasis
    Stone Roses
    Charlatans
    New Order
    Chemical Brothers
    The Ting Tings (!!)
    Happy Mondays
    James
    Joy Division
    The Smiths…

Not bad Mr Hudson, 7 out of 10.

I didn’t have the Ting Ting’s in as I am now 30. No Charlatans although that was probably an oversight. No Chemical Bros as they are not strictly a Manchester band in the truest sense of the word.

Replacing them were The Mock Turtles, maybe not a great Manchester band but a great Manchester song, and Steve Coogan’s brother was in the band. The Courteeners as I really like the Acrylic song. Finally one I’m surprised you overlooked – The Buzzcocks.
